Enhanced Capability Automatically Generates CAD Drawings of Custom, Configured Products to Deliver Products Faster and Eliminate Errors

CHICAGO and STOCKHOLM, April 13, 2021Tacton, a global leader in CPQ-based Smart Commerce solutions for manufacturers, today announced Tacton CPQ with CAD Automation, a newly enhanced product capability that fully automates the generation of CAD drawings of highly customized and configured products. CAD automation allows manufacturers to configure, design, and deliver custom products faster and with precision, eliminating errors and empowering customers, sales teams, and engineering to generate technical CAD drawings automatically.

In highly configurable manufacturing, customers often require detailed technical drawings to close a sale, but challenges such as manual handovers can lead to long and drawn-out sales processes. In addition, stakeholders often lack a single source of product data, leading to costly technical product design errors — not to mention, unhappy customers. Tacton CPQ with CAD Automation eliminates these pain points by empowering customers and sales reps without CAD skills to automatically generate technical drawings based on configurations. This automation empowers customers and sales while allowing engineers to focus on innovation, new products, and other value-creating tasks.

“In complex sales, engineering needs to be involved in every customer case to provide detailed technical drawings to close sales and build the customized products, but misunderstandings and a lack of technical product knowledge often lead to invalid quote requests,” said Bo Gyldenvang, Chief Executive Officer at Tacton. “When paired with our CPQ, CAD Automation automates these manual processes with ease, which makes sales teams more effective, frees up time for engineers, and, ultimately, delivers a pain-free experience to end customers.”

Tacton’s 15-plus years of experience and extensive knowledge of manufacturing vertical requirements contribute to making Tacton CPQ with CAD Automation a breeze to use because it is:

  • Easy to implement: Fast and easy CAD mappings via point-and-click with no coding required can be validated immediately and directly connected to the CPQ platform to exchange data in the background.
  • Easy to use: A simple and context-sensitive UI speeds up navigation, matching the UI of the host CAD system to ease orientation while integrated help texts speed up the onboarding of new users.
  • Easy to maintain: Clear separation between configuration models and CAD mappings along with intuitive recognition of already mapped elements allows users to simply test individual values or a complete configuration. In addition, one set of constraints means administrators don’t need to worry about synchronizing systems.

“With Tacton CPQ with CAD Automation, customers come in through the webshop, configure a product to their exact business requirements and, once finished, have instant access to validated 2D and 3D drawings, pricing and delivery time,” said Marcel Walvoort, Product Configuration Manager at Kramp, one of the largest technical wholesalers in Europe. “If a customer orders the item on Monday, they will have it by Wednesday. This is a major competitive advantage for us.”

Generating and providing CAD files early in the sales process eliminates misunderstandings and costly errors, ensuring reliability to the customer and promoting trust. Tacton CPQ with CAD Automation allows manufacturers to offer customized designs at a much lower cost, creating a valuable competitive advantage and boosting customer satisfaction.

Digital Sales, Customer Experience, and Supply Chain Optimization Drive Digital Transformation Efforts in Manufacturing

Tacton’s ‘State of Digital Manufacturing Survey’ Reveals the Strategies and Technologies Manufacturers Are Betting On to Help Them Thrive in 2021

CHICAGO and STOCKHOLM, March, 8th, 2021 — Tacton, a global leader in CPQ-based Smart Commerce solutions for manufacturers, today announced the results of its “State of Digital Manufacturing” research. The survey, conducted in January of this year, reflects changing mindsets among manufacturers as they struggled to pull themselves out of the quagmire of 2020, indicating that digital transformation is more important than ever heading into 2021. Indeed, the survey found that manufacturers believe digital transformation is the key to achieving business goals, with 97% of respondents saying it’s at least somewhat important, and 54% identifying it as extremely important.

The impact of recent economic times didn’t slow digital transformation efforts — in fact, the majority of respondents said they have continued or accelerated their efforts. Supply chain optimization is the most critical digital transformation investment initiative among manufacturers during the current economic uncertainty, with 64% citing it, followed by the digitalization/automation of internal processes (59%).

For the “State of Digital Manufacturing” report, Tacton surveyed more than 100 decision-makers, director and above, from the industrial manufacturing sector.

Most businesses believe that increasing product quality (59%) driving sales and revenue (58%), and improving customer experience (49%), are the three most important strategies for business growth and success. The survey found that leaders with different roles within organizations focus on different initiatives to achieve those business goals. For example, VP and C-level staff consider customer self-service sales an important investment initiative, while directors are more likely to believe digitalization/automation of internal processes are more important.

“The higher the importance a company assigns to digital transformation efforts, the more likely they are to believe improving the customer experience is important to remain competitive,” said Bo Gyldenvang, Chief Executive Officer at Tacton. “With this in mind, it’s encouraging to see manufacturers accelerating their digital transformation and focusing on their customer, to future-proof their business.”

Domestic and International Manufacturers Differ

According to the survey, U.S. companies seem to be further along in their digital transformation efforts compared to companies in other countries. International businesses do recognize a gap: A full 50% of international respondents said their organization lags behind competitors on the digital transformation front, compared to just 15% of domestic respondents who said the same.

In addition, U.S. companies place higher importance on customer self-service sales and supply chain optimization, while international companies place higher importance on partner/dealer sales and the digitalization/automation of internal processes. Also, international companies place more importance on improving the customer experience and increasing product quality when compared to their U.S. counterparts.

SKF: Configurators for Engineers: Focus on Machine Design – Not on Bearing Selection

The way you configure your new car has improved lately. Now, configuration technology is doing the same in engineering offices. Just as you shouldn’t need to be a car expert to configure the car, why would you as a gearbox design engineer need to be a bearing specialist to design that gearbox?

Choosing the right bearing for a new product has always been a time-consuming process. Design engineers need to consider hundreds of factors, many of which they need to estimate, in order to reach an optimum machine design.

Working in loops, a design engineer has to reach compromises. In a compact machine such as a gearbox, bearings compete for space with other components. Designers need to consider assembly, and whether bearings will need to be replaced during its lifetime. They also need to ensure that the solution chosen will fit within budget and overall weight limitations, to name a few. This is the performance-cost optimization that every engineer knows well. Once you are through, there’s the availability. If you are unlucky, you’ll need to start again because the product you chose was a special one, with too long a delivery time to meet the start of production (SoP) date.

“The traditional bearing selection process is linear when it should be concurrent,” says Victoria Van Camp, CTO at SKF. Design engineers work out their requirements, using the SKF catalog, to guide them through the various steps. We expect that this is something you as a customer engineer want to spend time on and learn – but why would you?

“Once you found a bearing that works, this goes to procurement, who in turn contacts SKF,” says van Camp. “Only then do they discover that the product chosen is a special order item with a long lead-time or higher than expected cost.”

“Our application engineers can guide the customer to a better solution, but this might take days or weeks – adding cost and complexity. And with Covid-19, it has to be done remotely with the risk of misunderstandings and more delays”

“Over the years, we have tried different ways to simplify picking the right bearing,” says van Camp. “We built dedicated calculation and simulation tools that automate many of the main tasks an engineer needs to complete. Now, a growing number of our customers are using them as integrated parts of their design process.” These calculation tools still don’t provide the critical link to cost and availability data, however, so they do not address some of the biggest pain points in the selection – the need to circle back. That is, until now.

Engineers, like most people, want a seamless user experience and put focus on the real difficulties. Realizing this, SKF took a new approach to bearing selection. “When you buy a car, the manufacturer often offers you a configurator,” says van Camp. “That is a simple tool, usually on a website, that allows you to describe your needs and wishes. The tool then guides you to a final (car) variant that meets your needs and is available.” Consumer product configuration tools include rules to ensure users only pick valid combinations of features. They also provide links to real-time price and stock information, so you as a customer can see the impact of your choices on eg. delivery time.

SKF is working on bringing the ease-of-use of the configurator to bearing selection. The company teamed up with Tacton ( www.tacton.com), which specializes in “configure-price-quote” (CPQ) systems for industrial products.

“Our partners at Tacton have a track record building configurators for industrial use,” says van Camp. “But our requirements are different. In bearing selection you are not just picking from a list of sizes. Instead, you need to do all the solid mechanics calculations to see the trade-offs between different variants of ball bearing.”

Now, SKF is driving the development of the next generation of industrial configurator. It combines SKF’s bearing simulation technology with Tacton’s CPQ engine. “With real users, the impact of the new approach has been extraordinary,” says van Camp. “You can start the bearing selection process in the morning, and in the afternoon you have identified a solution that will meet your technical-, cost- and delivery requirements. This will be a game-changer for engineering teams working on complex projects with tight timescales.”

The first version of the new SKF configurator will be launched later this year. It is designed specifically for electric vehicle powertrains, a fast-growing segment that places high demands on the bearings used. Over time, SKF plans to extend the approach to other industry segments. “Ultimately, we want to build more of our AI capabilities into these tools,” says van Camp. “We can foresee a world where bearing selection is automated, and every designer has an AI-powered bearing expert on their desktop.”
